Flight attendant training involves teaching potential flight attendants all about the various responsibilities they will hold. Among the topics covered in flight attendant training include teaching the potential flight attendant how to ensure the safety of flight passengers and to help them feel comfortable. Another aspect of flight attendant training involves learning how to handle disruptive passengers and how to properly help people from all types of backgrounds and customs.
As part of the flight attendant training, future flight attendants also must conduct a number of different drills. In order to successfully complete the flight attendant training, future flight attendants need to complete these drills without the assistance of the training staff. Similarly, future flight attendants must complete a number of tests that are specifically designed to eliminate those trainees that are likely to be unsuccessful in this career.
Near the end of the flight attendant training, future attendants must also go on practice flights. When they successfully complete their flight attendant training, they will then receive the FAA’s Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency. In addition, they are required to complete periodic flight attendant training and to successfully pass an FAA safety examination in order to continue working in the field.
Once the flight attendant training and necessary certification is completed, the flight attendant is generally placed on a reserve status for the airline he or she works for. In this position, the flight attendant is called upon to take the place of other attendants when they are sick, rerouted, or on vacation. As such, reserve flight attendants must be on call and capable of showing up to work on short notice. In many cases, the reserve flight attendant will remain in this position for one year, though flight attendants residing in some cities may be on the reserve list for five or even ten years before gaining a permanent position.
